Gwynfor Evans (1912–2005)

On 21 April 2005 Wales lost one of its greatest leaders of the 20th century. Gwynfor Evans became Plaid Cymru’s first Member of Parliament in 1966, making the party a significant political force in Wales. He played an important part in the campaign against the flooding of Tryweryn. In 1980 he threatened to fast to death in the campaign for a Welsh television channel and forced the government to reconsider. S4C first broadcast in 1982.
