Celebrating the Bible and new democracies
Wales celebrated the quartercentenary of translating the Bible into Welsh and there was a new hope in the valleys as the miners of Tower Colliery took over and ran their own pit.
There was a gradual end to communism in Europe and the Berlin wall was demolished in 1989. This led to the break up of the former Yugoslavia and fierce fighting between the nationalities in the region. Nelson Mandela was released from prison after 27 years in 1990 and within 4 years black people gained the right to vote. In 1990 the name of Saddam Hussain dominated the news headlines following his conquest of Kuwait. A new form of terrorism came to the fore when a plane exploded over the village of Lockerbie in 1988.
