400 years of the Welsh Bible

1988 saw the 400th anniversary of one of the most significant and far reaching events in Wales. The translation of the Bible into Welsh in 1588 by Bishop William Morgan was a feat, which standardised and enriched the Welsh language and strengthened the foundations of Welsh religious society. The intention was to distribute a copy of the Bible to every church in every parish where Welsh was spoken. Morgan was a key figure in the growth of literacy and religion in Wales.
