Aberfan
On 21 October 1966 a tip of coal slurry slid down over the village of Aberfan, burying the local school. 144 were confirmed dead, 116 of them children. Within seconds, a whole generation of children was wiped out. A tribunal opened on 29 November 1966 and its report of August 1967 held the National Coal Board accountable for the tragedy.
