Saunders Lewis (1893–1985)

Saunders Lewis was both a nationalist hero and one of Wales’ main literary figures of the 20th century. He was one of the founders of the Welsh Nationalist Party in 1925 and one of the three who took part in the burning of the bombing school at Penyberth in 1936. As an author Lewis achieved success in every medium in which he chose to write. He produced 21 plays, two collections of poetry and two novels. He galvanised a new generation of Welsh speakers with his inspirational lecture Tynged yr Iaith (The fate of the language) in 1962.
