Bute Estate
The Bute Estate in Cardiff was one of the largest and richest in Wales. The Second Marquis of Bute developed Cardiff as one of the main ports in South Wales and one of the world’s greatest outlets of coal exports. The estate had overseas contacts in the sugar plantations of the West Indies and took part in the slave trade until its abolition in 1807. The Library acquired the archive of the Bute Estate in 1950.
