Rebecca Riots centenary
The Rebecca Riots occurred mainly in south west Wales during the 1830s and 1840s. The Daughters of Rebecca first appeared in May 1839 when a group of men dressed in women’s clothes attacked the tollgate at Efail-wen, Pembrokeshire. The riots reached a climax during the summer of 1843 when 200 ‘women’ attacked a gate at Water Street, Carmarthen. Those arrested were punished severely: Sioni Sgubor Fawr was transported for life and Dai’r Cantwr and Jac Ty Isha for twenty years.
