World War II

The Second World War was the greatest global conflict ever seen. As Britain declared war against Germany in 1939 thousands of children were evacuated from the cities of England to Wales. 50,000 children came to the Rhondda alone. Women went to work in munitions factories and in the Land Army. In January 1941 165 people were killed by the German blitz bombings on Cardiff and three nights of bombing in February killed 230 people in Swansea.
