Between the wars

In 1927 Cardiff City Football Club won the FA Cup. No other Welsh team has emulated their achievement.

The state of affairs for workers worsened as unemployment soared to terrifying levels.

International affairs were on the front pages with Hitler’s rise to power in 1933. With the start of the civil war in Spain, 174 men from South Wales were drawn to fight against Franco’s army.

In 1936 three of Plaid Cymru’s most prominent figures became infamous when they burnt down the bombing school in Penyberth on the Lleyn Peninsula. This was the start of decades of non-violent criminal action for the Welsh language in Wales.
