Penyberth
A fire at Penyberth had far-reaching consequences within the Welsh nationalist movement. In the early hours of 8 September 1936, a fire was lit at Penyberth on the Llŷn Peninsula in protest at the government’s decision to locate a training camp for Royal Air Force bomber crews on the site. Saunders Lewis, D J Williams and Lewis Valentine immediately confessed their actions to the police. The case was referred to the Old Bailey in London and the three were found guilty and sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment in Wormwood Scrubs.
