The 1926 General Strike
Following months of dispute between the miners and the government a General Strike was announced in May 1926. It ran for nine days and brought Britain to a standstill. The miners gained the support of transport, factory and dockworkers, and national deadlock was only broken by the offer of new terms to the miners. These were rejected, and it was not until November 1926 that the miners finally returned to work.
