The promised land?
In 1911 the last group of migrants sailed from Wales to the Welsh colony in Patagonia. In 1865 the first group of migrants from Wales ventured to Patagonia in South America aboard the Mimosa. From the 17th century onwards, many migrants travelled to north America in search of religious freedom, farmland or work in the industrial towns. Some left Wales and the poverty of the 19th century in search of gold in north America and Australia.
