The coal mines

Coal mining was the most important and dangerous industry in Wales. Two blasts tore through the Universal Colliery, Senghennydd on Tuesday, 14 October 1913, killing 439 miners. 30 years later, on the 22 September 1934, an explosion in Gresford colliery near Wrexham killed 265 miners, and the pit was sealed.
